Cabin Of The Universe

Texture Cabin

Adobe Photoshop

During the summer of 2014, I had an amazing experience to go to a cottage with family and friends; during this adventure, my eyes were opened to a whole new light of relationships with people, and the memories created, almost like a new world was created for me; thus, giving the name, “Cabin of the Universe”. Partially named from my experience, but also from the cabins name itself. This cabin was named “Uranas”; as funny as I believed it to be in the beginning, the actually overall meaning took from it turned into something bigger, something amazing.

I created/edited this picture in Adobe Photoshop, using a type of skill that was new to me, but turned out a very simple way. I used two different pictures (originals found below), the cabin picture, and a picture of the inside of a log, both of which I took when at my cottage, adding a deeper meaning and connection. Both images we placed into photoshop and edited individually. The cabin picture had the edges darkened by adjusting the layers, as well as the brightness and contrast to add “bite” to the image. As well as this, using an elliptical shaped frame, adjusted the darkness around the edges of the picture very slightly to add more depth and tie the whole image together. Both the cabin picture and the wooden texture picture had their over all colours tweaked by darkening their overall image and adjusting the colour contrast by using different histograms. The texture itself had the brightness changed dramatically by moving it into the negative numbers on a scale, to add a big contrast and allow the image to stand out and be very bright. Lastly, the blending mode was changed in the image to overlay, then by erasing the image, the texture was shown through, allowing the cabins overall look to be given a new appearance.

I really enjoyed how the final piece turned out. The overall brightness of the image turned out to be a great success in my mind, and added to the look created. I feel it helped further define the meaning, as it seemed “out of this world” by the final looks, both from the colours and the texture in the piece. However, one thing I would do differently next time would be to darken the edges more so the image has more of a framed looked, as well as avoiding the dark marks created from the trees by adjusting their contrast. I believe that by darkening the edges, the picture would feel more unison, but the overall look now I believe is still very unique, beautiful, and something of a supernova.

Before completing the “Cabin of the Universe”  piece, I created a first piece for a test run to see what I would do differently, what I liked and experiment.
