Kristy Patterson

As we grow, one is constantly learning new words, and all the worlds in the world can be found in one spot; the dictionary. As time progresses, dictionary page art has been a growing with the times.

Kristy Patterson is an artist who doesn’t have a truly established visual voice or style. She, herself is an art teacher who uses a wide variety of mediums and styles whose developed a number of concentrations and portfolios over the years, but has felt no one style or subject has felt true or stuck.

“Creating art is a much like breathing to me – something I just have to.  My feet don’t touch the ground and I feel like I am airborne when I am being creative.”

Her most recent creations have came from discarded dictionaries. The simplicity of the little drawings resemble vintage illustrations from her childhood that, with the drawn image and page itself, narrate a story. She uses multiple mediums to further advance and develop the fragile old children dictionary pages that are rescued from libraries across the country and repurpose them to keep and capture their importance.

I have decided to use Kristy Patterson as my inspiration for my final culminating piece for a variety of reasons, ranging from visual appearance and the idea of her art itself. I am visually attracted to her style of work and have always wanted to create artwork like this. To me, it reminds me of printmaking, but in a way that doesn’t need to have stamps produced, inked, and rolled. I like how the artwork itself is very simple, as it only contains one word of text, plus the image that corresponds with it. For me, I always create projects that are complex and time consuming that always leave me feeling rushed in my creation process. For this assignment, I want to create a series of work that resemble this style; because I’ve chosen to do a series, I have the option to do as little as three, to as many as I want. This project gives me the opportunity to use my drawing skills to capture a piece of art in a series form, by using both pencil and paper, and scanning in it and continuing the process on Illustrator and Photoshop, using the drawing tablet.
