Irene Suchocki

As poetry is beauty to the ears, Irene Suchocki’s work is parallel to her website titled, “Eye Beauty”, as her work is beauty to the eye. Suchocki is a photographer, who, after taking her pictures, slightly edits them in Photoshop sometimes, by adding in little clip arts of things, like hearts; she does this in certain portfolios, especially in the one titled, Paris: City of Love. She takes photographs of all sorts of things, ranging from city life, to animals to nature and the outdoors.

                                                                      New York, New York (Portfolio)

While exploring the various portfolios done by Suchocki, I found one titled New York, New York, and in it a image set that really appealed to me (image above). This particular photograph set caught my eye and the overall look of the images captured my attention and made me want to keep looking. These two images above are very successful in the makings of a successful photograph.

The set of photographs follows compositional techniques, and also uses different camera techniques to make the photograph(s) more unique in the final outcome. By using different compositional techniques, the image is successful and appealing to the eye. Some of the techniques used are balance, framing, numbers and viewpoint. These techniques can be seen in the first photograph on the left; Balance can be seen because the bridge is centered in the piece. Since there is nothing on either side of it, it is balanced in weight and not heavier on one side. Framing is the most visible technique seen in this photograph. This technique is used to frame the center of interest with objects in the foreground. The trees on both sides complete the frame  and add depth to the subject.  Another technique that can be seen in the left photograph is numbers. This is the rule of odds, and how odd numbers of objects are always more interesting than even numbers. There is three objects in the piece; the two trees framing and the main focus of the bridge. By the objects in the photograph being odd allows the picture to be more appealing and interesting. The last technique seen is viewpoint. The picture itself is taken on an angle, rather then straight on. This gives character and depth to the picture and allows the bridge to be given another and more interesting look. In the right photograph, there is one main technique seen in it, which is viewpoint. The picture itself is up near the top of the buildings, meaning it is in birds eye view. By doing this, it adds interest and appeal to the picture, and gives the viewer a different look at things. A certain photography skill is displayed in the right picture. As a photographer, there are many different elements and skills that come into play when taking a picture. Two main things to focus on when taking a picture is aperture (depth of field) and shutter speed. These two things allow light to come through, and the objects to be in focus. By having a small depth of field, only part of the image will be in focus. This can be seen in the right photograph because the image itself is blurry, expect the building on the far right. By doing this, the building becomes the almost focal point of the piece, and also adds a unique look to the picture itself.  By having a faster shutter speed, less light can come through the image, thus resulting in less detail in the picture.  Suchocki seemed to have done this in the photograph, thus making the edges of the buildings less visible/clear.

Overall I find these photographs to be both very appealing and successful. They can easily capture the viewers attention and her skills and techniques are very unique and help her create her own style in her work. By adding her own touch to her photographs help by not only making them flow together and come together as one subject topic, but also allow them to stick out as her own as original and unique pictures. I have explored all her portfolios and found new and interesting things in all her pictures, and find each picture itself to be a thing of beauty. Each photograph captures its own story and, through its details, tells you about it, in-capturing the “Eye Poetry” that Suchocki wants to write, capture and create.
